Every shelter cat should have double-compartment housing if they are in a cage. Providing at least 8 square feet of floor space in cages for cats decreases stress and therefore the incidence of upper respiratory infections. Cats have room to stretch out, to eat and sleep away from their bathroom area, and show their best selves to potential adopters.

Portals are not just better for cats... they're also better for staff. They're easy to install and have a door that can open and close to allow for proper spot cleaning. We have seen and documented the power of portals for years. Now that many shelters have reduced capacity as a result of the pandemic, we know it's a good time to install portals in those empty cages. Thanks to some very generous sponsors, the Million Cat Challenge has made available more than 1,500 portals for free.
